Meet William Rainey – Championing Visitor Experiences in Mid and East Antrim
In the picturesque village of Glenarm, where forest trails lead to castle gates and the sea breeze carries centuries of stories, you’ll find William Rainey, a dedicated and passionate figure in Mid and East Antrim’s tourism landscape. As Visitor Attraction Supervisor at Glenarm Castle & Garden, William is not just a staff member - he’s a storyteller, a guide, and a proud ambassador for the region.

A Passion Rooted in Nature
William first dipped his toes into tourism back in 2008 during a student work placement at Carnfunnock Country Park while studying Rural and Countryside Management at Greenmount College. Fast forward to 2017, and he was back - this time as a Park Warden - bringing his passion for the outdoors and local heritage full circle. It was here that he first discovered the joy of engaging with visitors - day trippers, campers, and international tourists alike. “I loved being outdoors and sharing what made the area special,” he recalls. That early experience sparked a deeper interest in hospitality and heritage, leading him to one of Northern Ireland’s most dramatic attractions: The Gobbins Cliff Path.

Finding His Voice at The Gobbins
At The Gobbins, William’s passion for history and nature found a perfect outlet. Over five years, he took on multiple roles - from Tour Guide and Path Safety Officer to Duty Officer - each offering new ways to connect with visitors and ensure their experience was both safe and unforgettable. “It was a place where I could share stories, help people explore, and be part of something truly unique,” he says.

Stepping Into a Dream Role
In 2022, William’s career took a meaningful turn when a friend recommended a role at Glenarm Castle. Having grown up nearby and spent countless childhood walks in the surrounding forest, the estate held a special place in his heart. “I’d always admired the castle from afar,” he says. “When I saw the opportunity to work there, I jumped at it.”
Now, as Visitor Attraction Supervisor, William’s days are filled with variety and excitement. “No two weeks are the same,” he explains. “I’m based at the Welcome Centre, which is the first point of contact for guests. It’s a great place to greet people and set the tone for their visit.” From leading guided tours of the castle - often alongside the Castle Butler, whose storytelling brings the history of Glenarm to life - to supporting seasonal events and activities across the estate, William’s role is dynamic and deeply rewarding. “One of the most magical times at Glenarm is during the festive season, when preparations for the Christmas Experience transform the grounds into the Kingdom of Dalriada,” he shares. “It’s a busy and energetic period but seeing the wonder on children’s faces makes every moment worthwhile. Being part of a team that creates lasting memories for visitors is incredibly special.”

Moments That Matter
What brings him the most joy? “Meeting people from all over the world and seeing their reactions during our tours. Watching guests become captivated by the history and beauty of Glenarm Castle is something I never tire of.”
One particularly memorable experience involved a visit from a local primary school class. “The children were learning about castles and came for a tour. Their teacher asked if she could play one of the castle’s pianos so the children could sing. It was magical - seeing their eyes light up as they explored the rooms and heard the music echo through the halls.” A few weeks later, William received a heartfelt letter from each student, thanking him and George the Butler for the experience. “It was incredibly touching and reminded me why I do what I do.”
So what keeps the passion alive? “It’s the feedback from guests. When someone returns and remembers my name, or tells me how much they enjoyed their visit, it means the world. Knowing I’ve helped create lasting memories is what drives me.”

Championing the Causeway Coastal Route
William’s deep local roots and genuine enthusiasm make him a valuable guide for visitors exploring the Causeway Coastal Route. “We often get guests stopping with us on their way up or down the coast. I always try to get to know them and recommend places based on their interests. Having grown up in the area, I know the hidden gems and the stories behind them.”

Living the “Shaped by Sea and Stone” Brand
Being part of the “Shaped by Sea and Stone” tourism brand is a personal honour for William. “I’ve worked at several attractions along the coast and grew up surrounded by this landscape. I feel I’m a great ambassador for the brand because I live and breathe the stories it represents.”
For William, the people of Mid and East Antrim are just as special as the places. “The community here is warm, welcoming, and proud of its heritage. There’s a real sense of connection and pride, and that’s something visitors feel when they come here.”
A Career Worth Exploring
His advice to anyone considering a career in tourism or hospitality? “Go for it. The sector in Mid and East Antrim is growing rapidly, and there are so many opportunities to get involved. If you love meeting people, sharing stories, and being part of something bigger, you’ll find your place here.”
William Rainey is more than a staff member at Glenarm Castle - he’s a living link between past and present, helping visitors experience the magic of Mid and East Antrim through warm welcomes, rich stories, and unforgettable moments.
