About
The Museum contains over 8000 items most of which were collects by Dr Tony Redmond, who when he saw something he considered of interest being thrown out asked if he could have it, At one time he had three barns full of items. The museum started in the medical practice, but has had a number of homes before moving to its present location.
The items are organised into sections the main ones being life from birth to death, including the first mobile defibrillator which was developed in Northern Ireland. Famous people who have connections with the village, Ned Kelly, whose mother and many of his associates in Australia originated from Broughshane. Sir James Russell who was Lord Chief Justice of Hong Kong. Sir George White VC hero of the siege of Ladysmith. Other interesting exhibits include agriculture, blacksmiths, transport, music, railways, mining , home life and much more. The displays are made up of clothes, tools, photographs, documents, equipment (and even a few videos on the screens at either end!), that have been donated by people over the many years that the museum has been active.
On your visit, you'll note that on a lot of our displays, we try to have the name of the people who donated the object and when, as these details are just as important as the object itself. We have several areas about interesting personalities and people of the area - like R.J. Kernohan, Sam Stevenson, Kate Reade, Sir James Russell, Vonla McBride, Martha and Paul Esler, and so many more. Please feel free to bring to our attention any errors or omissions with the displays, as occasionally, some 100 year old colloquialisms are hard to deduce!
