About
Opened in 1870, People’s Park is Ballymena’s flagship Green Flag Award-winning park, combining Victorian heritage with modern facilities across 45 acres of beautifully maintained parkland. As one of the town’s most popular green spaces, it offers a welcoming destination for visitors of all ages to relax, play, stay active, and enjoy the outdoors.
Families can take advantage of dedicated play areas for both younger and older children, alongside a specially designed sensory area that provides an inclusive and stimulating environment. The park has dedicated Quiet Hour every Wednesday and Sunday 2-3pm.
The park also features an urban skate park with ramps and -slopes suitable for a range of ages and abilities. For those looking to stay active, there are four floodlit Astroturf tennis courts, a football pitch, and an outdoor gym. Expansive open lawns provide plenty of space for picnics, informal recreation, relaxation, and non-fixed free play.
People’s Park is a thriving community hub and hosts a wide variety of events throughout the year. Popular activities include the weekly Junior Parkrun every Sunday morning, seasonal celebrations, outdoor theatre performances, Halloween events, and a range of council-led programmes that bring the local community together.
The park pavilion provides convenient toilet facilities and serves as a central focal point within the park. Nearby, the picturesque People’s Park Dam offers a tranquil setting and supports a diverse range of wildlife throughout the year. Visitors can also enjoy refreshments from the onsite Coffee and Ice Cream vendors.
Nature enthusiasts will find plenty to discover, with bird species regularly spotted around the lake and surrounding parkland including teal, greylag geese, mute swans, and treecreepers. During the spring and summer months, vibrant seasonal planting around the pavilion and bowling green creates colourful displays that further enhance the park’s beauty and character.
Situated just a short walk from Ballymena town centre and easily accessible by local bus services, People’s Park remains one of the borough’s most cherished destinations for recreation, community events, wildlife watching, and outdoor leisure.
