About

Carnlough Beach curves gracefully along a natural horseshoe-shaped bay on the Causeway Coastal Route, offering visitors a peaceful shoreline of soft sand and pebbles. At high tide, the waves reach the sea wall along half of the beach’s length, while the remaining stretch invites gentle strolls and relaxed play on the sand.

Facing east toward Scotland, the beach enjoys striking views of the Mull of Kintyre—its shifting colours clearly visible on bright days. Sheltered by Carnlough Bay, the waters here are typically calm, making it a pleasant spot for paddling, swimming, or simply unwinding by the sea. Although no lifeguards are stationed at the beach, safety equipment including life rings is provided by the council and positioned along the full length of the railings.

Carnlough Beach is a favourite destination for families, walkers, and sea swimmers. Its clean, high‑quality water and scenic harbour make it a charming setting for summer dips, picnics by the shore, or a relaxed evening wander. During the village’s annual festival in late July, the beach comes to life with events such as the ever‑popular sandcastle competition. Wildlife watchers may even be rewarded with a glimpse of dolphins, which frequently visit the bay.

Stretching approximately 1.5 km, this welcoming beachfront combines natural beauty with village charm - offering something to enjoy in every season and within easy walking distance of places to eat, accommodation and toilet facilities.
