Meet Sophie Hawthorne: Carrickfergus Castle Visitor Information Centre

At the gateway to one of Northern Ireland's most iconic landmarks, Sophie Hawthorne is often one of the first friendly faces visitors encounter when they arrive in Carrickfergus. As a Tourism Advisor at the Carrickfergus Castle Visitor Information Centre, she plays a vital role in helping guests discover not only the castle itself but the many hidden gems that make Mid and East Antrim such a special place to explore.

A Career Change That Opened New Doors

Sophie's journey into tourism began with a desire for something new.

'I was looking for a career change and the opportunity to become a tour guide at The Gobbins came up,' Sophie explains.  'Because I was local to the area and had always been interested in the rich history The Gobbins provides, I decided to take the opportunity and join the team.'

That decision sparked a lasting interest in tourism and over the last six years Sophie has built a rewarding career in the sector, first guiding visitors along the dramatic Gobbins Cliff Path and now welcoming international guests to Carrickfergus Castle Visitor Information Centre.

No Two Days Are Ever the Same

For Sophie, variety is one of the best parts of the role.  'Every day at the Carrickfergus Castle Visitor Information Centre is wonderfully different,' she says.   Her day begins by preparing the Visitor Information Centre for the arrival of guests before welcoming visitors from near and far. From answering questions about Carrickfergus Castle and sharing local recommendations to helping with transport enquiries and travel plans, Sophie ensures every visitor receives the information they need to make the most of their time in the borough.

Some days are filled with busy tour groups and school visits, while others allow more time for personal conversations with families, couples and solo travellers.  'Hearing their stories and seeing how excited they are to visit our amazing castle is exactly what keeps me inspired and loving my job,' she says.

Creating a Warm Welcome

What Sophie enjoys most is making people feel comfortable, valued and welcome from the moment they arrive.  'The part of my job that I take pride in is making the customer or tourist feel completely comfortable and welcomed,' she says.

She enjoys being one of the first faces visitors see and takes pride in creating a positive first impression. She also values the conversations she has with visitors and the opportunity to learn something new from every interaction.

Helping Visitors Discover the Real Mid and East Antrim

Sophie's role extends far beyond providing maps and information.  'My role helps customers understand the area, where to visit and why they should visit certain places,' she says.  By understanding what interests each visitor, she can recommend attractions, places to eat and hidden gems they may never have heard of before, helping them make the most of their visit to Mid and East Antrim.

A Brush with Hollywood

Among Sophie's many memorable encounters, one stands out above all others.  After recognising actor Luke Evans during a visit to the castle, Sophie discreetly asked if he was indeed the well-known star. He confirmed that he was and kindly offered to pose for a photograph.  'He was extremely friendly and kind, and of course it's something my colleagues and I still laugh about today,' Sophie says.

Proud of Place

Sophie's passion for Mid and East Antrim shines through whenever she speaks about the area.  'What makes Mid and East Antrim so special is that it's such a wonderful mix of breathtaking history, stunning coastlines and the warmest, most genuine community you could find anywhere,' she says.

From Carrickfergus Castle and The Gobbins to coastal villages and scenic harbours, Sophie believes it is this combination of heritage, landscape and community spirit that leaves a lasting impression on visitors.

"Every corner feels alive with stories and heritage that stretch back centuries," Sophie says. "But it's the people who really make this place shine."

Sharing the Story of Sea and Stone

Sophie's passion is fuelled by a combination of heritage, visitors and place.  'I love that I get to be part of looking after and sharing Carrickfergus Castle and helping keep its stories alive for every generation,' she says.

She is equally inspired by the people she meets each day.  'Seeing people arrive curious and leave happy, inspired and with a real connection to our area is a great feeling.'

As someone who represents the Shaped by Sea and Stone brand every day, Sophie feels a strong connection to its meaning.  'This isn't just a slogan to me,' she says. 'It describes our place perfectly.'

A Career Worth Pursuing

For anyone considering a career in tourism and hospitality, Sophie has a simple message.  'I'd absolutely say go for it,' she says. 'It's such a rewarding and joyful career.'
