For over a decade, Emma Gribben has been welcoming visitors to The Gobbins, one of Northern Ireland's most unique coastal experiences. As a member of the Guest Relations team, Emma helps ensure every visitor enjoys a memorable journey, from booking their tour to stepping out onto the dramatic cliff path walk. With its spectacular bridges, tunnels and sea views, The Gobbins attracts visitors from across the world, and Emma is often one of the first friendly faces they meet
A Tourism Journey That Started in Larne
"My journey in tourism began back in the late 90s when I took a Summer job in Larne Tourism Office," Emma explains. "I thoroughly enjoyed meeting people from all around the world coming into Larne Harbour." That early experience sparked a lasting interest in tourism and hospitality. When the opportunity arose to join The Gobbins, Emma was eager to be part of its next chapter. "When I heard The Gobbins was reopening I applied for the position of Guest Relations and was overjoyed at getting the job."
Welcoming the World to The Gobbins
Every day brings different visitors and new conversations, making the role both varied and rewarding. "I thoroughly enjoy working with the public as no two days are the same. Meeting people from all over the world is an absolute pleasure." Emma's role centres around helping visitors make the most of their Gobbins experience. From managing bookings and answering questions before arrival to welcoming guests at the Visitor Centre and preparing them for their guided walk, she plays an important role in ensuring visitors feel informed, confident and excited before setting off along the cliff path.
One of her favourite moments is seeing visitors return from the tour and hearing their reactions. "Working with tour operators and welcoming the buses off the cruise ships and seeing their reaction to what a beautiful place we live in would be one of my favourite parts of the day."
Creating Connections Through Community
“I can honestly say there are so many aspects to my job," she says. The Visitor Centre also serves as a valuable community hub, bringing together local groups, businesses and residents of all ages through a range of activities and events. "I firmly believe that as a local community everyone that is involved in The Gobbins Visitor Centre loves chatting to all people visiting. It's a great vibe every day from opening to closing."
Sharing the Real Mid and East Antrim
Emma takes pride in helping visitors discover the authentic side of Mid and East Antrim through local eyes. "As a local I have a vast knowledge of where to stay, eat and drink. I know all the hidden wee gems and know a lot of local people so I can give a personal touch that I think visitors find reassuring." Emma's commitment to supporting the local economy extends to the Visitor Centre gift shop, where she helps promote locally sourced products that reflect the area's heritage, creativity and character.
Moments That Matter
Over the years, Emma has met thousands of visitors, but one encounter remains especially memorable. She recalls meeting an American visitor whose grandmother had met an American soldier in Larne during the Second World War before emigrating to the United States. After her grandmother's passing, the visitor travelled to Northern Ireland to learn more about her family roots and fulfil a promise she had made. "It was such a lovely experience. Lots of the places the lady described I knew exactly where to send her to see them."
Driven by Passion and Progress
After more than a decade at The Gobbins, Emma remains as enthusiastic as ever and is looking forward to what lies ahead. "There are great plans for the future of The Gobbins which is exciting as it can only get bigger and better." For Emma, the combination of people, place and future opportunities continues to make the role rewarding. "It is a very easy job to have passion for. It certainly lives up to the saying 'A World Class Visitor Attraction'."
Shaped by Sea and Stone
Emma feels a strong connection to the Shaped by Sea and Stone brand. "Being part of Shaped by Sea and Stone gives a base in which you can showcase all the area has to offer." She regularly hears visitors say they wish they had allowed more time to explore the borough. "Usually, people don't leave enough time in the area but say they will definitely be back, only staying longer."
Advice for Future Tourism Professionals
For anyone considering a career in tourism and hospitality, Emma's advice is simple. "Go for it. You will learn so many social skills. You will meet people from all around the world from all different nationalities. Every day's a different experience."
Leaving a Lasting Impression
After more than a decade at The Gobbins, Emma continues to play an important role in shaping visitors' experiences of Mid and East Antrim. Whether guiding someone towards a hidden gem, sharing local recommendations or helping them begin their Gobbins adventure, Emma's dedication ensures that many visitors leave with unforgettable memories and a desire to return and explore even more.
