About

Experience the Magic of Sunflowers and Wildflowers in Full Bloom!

Make this summer unforgettable by visiting the stunning Sunflower Field in Portglenone, where over 100,000 sunflowers are expected to bloom. Perfect for family outings and Instagram-worthy photos, the fields are at their peak from August to early September, offering vibrant and breathtaking scenery. (Official opening date will be publicised on Facebook.)

A Beautiful Tradition for a Worthy Cause

Walk among towering sunflowers and immerse yourself in a sea of golden blooms. These fields not only provide a beautiful escape but also support a noble cause, with this year’s charity being the Macmillan Unit in Antrim Hospital.

A Photographer’s Dream

With endless photo opportunities, the Sunflower Field is the ideal backdrop for your family memories, drawings and social media. Wander through this maze of sunflowers and capture the beauty of nature at its finest.

Explore and Enjoy Nature’s Wonder

The field is home to a variety of wildlife, including butterflies and buzzing creatures. In addition to the sunflower acre, there’s a delightful wildflower area featuring a “butterfly hotel,” where plants attract and sustain these delicate insects.

Visitor Guidelines

Paths: Follow the blue rope through the fields, looping around the wildflower area. Paths are wheelchair and buggy-friendly, with wide, bark-covered paths (subject to weather and ground conditions).

Toilets: A single portaloo is available at the entrance.

Rubbish: No bins are provided, so please bring a bag to take your litter away. Help keep the area clean by picking up any stray rubbish.

Footwear: The field can be muddy after rain. Bring a spare pair of shoes to stay comfortable.

Respect the Flowers: This is not a pick-your-own field. Please do not pick any sunflowers or wildflowers. Sunflowers and seeds are available for purchase.

Accessibility and Amenities

Weather & Opening Hours: Northern Ireland weather can be unpredictable. Dress appropriately and be prepared for changes.  Please keep an eye on our Facebook page for operating times.

Nearby Facilities: While there are no facilities at the field itself, Portglenone offers toilets and a few eating establishments.

Dogs: Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead. Please clean up after your pets and dispose of waste properly.

A Sunflower Experience Like No Other

Once the sunflowers stand tall and their golden heads open, the wait is truly worth it. Join us in celebrating the beauty of nature and create cherished memories in the Sunflower Field of Portglenone.  We look forward to welcoming you!

And in case you ever wondered, when the sunflower field closes in September, the seeds are left for the birds throughout the winter months. Be amazed by the bird life that flourishes, including blue tits, great tits, coal tits, chaffinches, robins, greenfinches, and even the rare brambling!

Road Directions

First, get yourself to Portglenone. In the town centre, take the Gortgole Road heading north.  After about five minutes driving, you’ll see the field on your left hand side.  If you spot the Killycoogan Road on the right hand side, you’ve gone too far.

For directions if you Google Sunflower Field Portglenone and click on maps:  https://goo.gl/maps/14pfUhE21nEZdzfB9

Parking is in a field beside the sunflower field, which will be signposted.  If you have mobility issues you can park at the side of the field.  Take care when exiting your car - especially with kids and dogs. Also, don’t park close to a junction or entrance, as large tractors and lorries frequently use these roads and need more space to turn.
