Tradition Lace Making Demonstration
Irish lace has a rich history spanning nearly four centuries, gracing clothes, vestments and accessories. Many of the women who made the lace were never wealthy enough to wear it themselves. Lace schools were established in the 1850s. They employed teachers from England and Belgium to teach young women in bobbin lace techniques which is a type of work produced by plaiting threads around pins on a supporting pillow, using thread wound around bone or wooden bobbins.
Come along to the Old Schoolhouse on Saturday 12th September and find out more about this traditional craft from the ladies of the N.I. Lace Guild. They will have samples of other lace styles, demonstrate how lace is made and give visitors the opportunity to try their hand at Bobbin lace making. 1:30-4:30pm Free Settlement Tours on offer as well in the afternoon. No booking required.
