May is here, and you know what that means - it's National Walking Month! And where better to celebrate than in the stunning landscapes of Mid & East Antrim? National Walking Month is the perfect opportunity to journey through picturesque towns and breathtaking scenery and to explore the best places to walk in Ballymena, Carrickfergus, Larne, Carnlough, Ballygally, Whitehead, Glenarm, Islandmagee, and Broughshane. Lace up those boots, grab your camera, and let's hit the trails! 


Ballymena:

Start your adventure in Ballymena, a charming town known for its green spaces and friendly locals. Head to the Ecos Centre and Nature Park for a leisurely stroll along the River Braid, where you'll spot wildlife and enjoy tranquil surroundings. For a more challenging hike, tackle Slemish Mountain, steeped in legend and offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

Islandmagee

It's one of Northern Ireland's most stunning coastal walks. The Gobbins Cliff Path is an absolute must-do if you're looking for a walk that will truly immerse you in the environment. Starting at the Visitor Centre, you'll be part of a small group, and taken by bus to the trailhead, where you descend a steep hill down to the water's edge, and here the fun begins. Follow the path carved into the rock face, cross steel bridges and climb steps some of which are over a century old. You'll go through a cave, cross a suspension bridge and even spot wildlife like puffins, guillemots, razorbills and even dolphins. This is one for the bucket list! Carrickfergus:

Next stop, Carrickfergus, home to one of Northern Ireland's most iconic landmarks - Carrickfergus Castle. After exploring the castle, take a stroll along the scenic coastal path, where you can admire views of Belfast Lough and spot seabirds along the way. Don't forget to stop for a well-deserved ice cream at one of the local shops!

Larne area:

In Larne, you'll find a wealth of walking opportunities, from rugged coastal trails to peaceful forest paths. Stop off to explore some of the stunning spots at attractions like the picturesque Gleno Waterfall. Or why not get lost in the woods of Carnfunnock Country Park on one of several walking trails there?

Carnlough:

Prepare to be enchanted by the coastal village of Carnlough, with its quaint harbour and scenic surroundings by the sea. Follow the footpath along Garron Road soak up views of rugged cliffs and sparkling seas, pausing to explore hidden coves and caves along the way. Keep an eye out for seals basking on the rocks!

Ballygally:

A few miles further along the coast from Carnlough lies the charming village of Ballygally, home to the iconic Ballygally Castle Hotel. From here, you can walk the beautiful Ballygally beach and coast road with views of the Antrim Coast and the Scottish Isles. A short drive inland brings you to the stunning Sallagh Braes, where you’ll find sweeping hills with panoramic views over the coast. Keep your camera handy for the perfect Instagram shot!

Whitehead:

Whitehead may be small, but it packs a punch when it comes to scenic walks. Explore the picturesque Whitehead Promenade, where you can stroll along the seafront and enjoy views of the Mull of Galloway in Scotland on a clear day. For a longer adventure, tackle the exhilarating Blackhead Path, which winds its way along dramatic cliffs and past the historic Blackhead lighthouse.

Glenarm:

Nestled at the foot of Glenarm Glen, this charming village is a walker's paradise. Explore the enchanting Glenarm Forest, where you can wander through ancient woodlands and discover hidden waterfalls. For a taste of history, don't miss the Glenarm Castle & Gardens, with its beautiful gardens and scenic walking trails.

Broughshane:

Last but not least, we have Broughshane, known locally as the "Garden Village of Ulster." Explore the tranquil pathways of the Broughshane Waterfowl Walk, where you can wander through wildflower meadows and ancient woodlands. It is one of only two places in the world where all seven species of swan can be found!
