Visit a recently restored clachan, centred around a traditional thatched cottage, and discover a rare glimpse of Ireland’s rural past. One cottage features an ancient cruck frame made from bog oak over 5,000 years old—dating back before Newgrange, Stonehenge, and the Egyptian pyramids.
Reflecting this year’s theme, Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reimagine, the site highlights how endangered building traditions can be carefully restored and adapted for modern use. With traditional thatched homes now extremely rare, this project shows how heritage can be brought back to life.
It also connects to USA 250, exploring how Irish building skills and vernacular traditions travelled across the Atlantic, shaping early structures in the eastern United States.
