Charles Sheils Housing Complex is a residential heritage site, open for external viewing only, featuring striking Victorian Gothic buildings designed by Charles Lanyon. Built in 1868 through the philanthropy of Charles Sheils, the houses were created to support the local community—a purpose that continues today.
The site reflects the vulnerability of historic residential buildings and the importance of shared stewardship. Careful conservation, including the 2020 roof and finial refurbishment with its distinctive fish scale slates, has helped safeguard this heritage for future generations.
Visitors can enjoy guided or self guided tours of the grounds, explore revived historic features such as a wildlife pond, hedging, wildflower meadows and bee friendly planting, and visit productive community growing areas. Activities include creative art sessions in the Summer House, a medicinal herb hunt, meeting the flock of hens, and taking home a plant.
Meet community volunteers who help care for this living heritage, enjoy live music from local musicians, and storytelling that revives traditional entertainment. Tea and coffee are available free of charge at No. 31 Sheils Houses. Dogs must be kept on a lead.
