Carnlough historian Mary Watson will explore how Frances Anne Vane-Tempest (1800-1865) connected with people across Europe in her travels, with her business interests, and her passion f or many residences around Ireland and England.
Frances Anne, Marchioness of Londonderry, was the sole daughter and heiress of Sir Henry Vane-Tempest, Bart., of Durham, and Anne Catherine, Countess of Antrim. Frances Anne was a very successful business manager who played an important role in the development of Carnlough and also in the north-east of England. She was a leading social figure in London and Europe; her acquaintances included the Duke of Wellington, Benjamin Disraeli and Tsar Alexander I.
Mary Watson's talk will examine the fascinating life of this unique lady.
This talk is taking place as part of European Heritage Open Days 2025. The theme for 2025 is "Architectural Heritage – Past structures – Future Connections."
