To celebrate European Heritage Open Days 2026, Blackhead Lightkeepers’ Houses in Whitehead will be open on Sunday 13th September from 10am to 4pm.
This is a free event and a chance to explore the coastal heritage of these beautifully restored houses, perched beside the still-operating Blackhead Lighthouse. Take in sweeping views over Belfast Lough and discover the lives of the lightkeepers who once lived and worked here.
Managed by the Irish Landmark Trust, an educational charity dedicated to saving, sharing and sustaining Ireland’s built heritage, the site reflects how distinctive historic buildings—from lighthouses to schoolhouses and castles—can be carefully conserved and brought back into meaningful use. Please note: there is no access to the Lighthouse tower.
