About

Let your heart beat to the sound of the Lambeg Drum as you become immersed in its large role within Northern Irish culture.

Steeped in rich history and folklore, join expert tour guide Billy Thompson as you uncover the secrets and stories that are interwoven into the very creation of the instrument. As an interactive experience, Billy will guide you through the natural products, such as oak and goat skin, used in the formation of the drum, how they come together to create their distinctive sound, all whilst delving into the captivating history of the world’s loudest percussion instrument.

Although the Lambeg Drum’s origins and journey to Northern Ireland remain largely unknown, you will hear about the links between the 17th-century soldiers at Carrickfergus Castle and the drum itself, which was often used to rally the troops and boost morale.

Not only will you be shown how to play the drum but you’ll also be treated to a live performance from one of Northern Ireland’s Lambeg drummers. With an ability to reach sounds of 120dB - the equivalent to a clap of thunder - you’ll be invited to take in the distinctive rhythm and beats of the Lambeg drum all while enjoying a hot drink and light bite.
