Open Day at Blackhead Lightkeepers' Houses EHOD 2025

About

To celebrate European Heritage Open Days 2025, Blackhead Lightkeepers’ Houses in Whitehead will be open on Sunday 14th September from 10:00 to 16:00. This is a chance to explore the coastal heritage of these beautifully restored houses, perched beside the still-operating Blackhead Lighthouse. Take in sweeping views over Belfast Lough and discover the lives of the lightkeepers who once lived and worked here.

Irish Landmark Trust is a non-profit organisation that finds interesting and unusual properties that are in need of conservation, and gives them a sustainable new life. Since 1992, we’ve been turning historic buildings into truly special self-catering holiday accommodation. Our properties range from lighthouses and schoolhouses to castles and gate lodges.

These three Victorian houses dating from 1901 have changed little since they were built and retain many of their original features with elegant detailing such as high ceilings and long sash windows affording wonderful view out to sea. The lighthouse was fully automated in 1969 and guides ships safety through Belfast Lough.

These three houses are now available as holiday accommodation with House 1 sleeping 5 people, House 2 sleeping 7 and the Cutter sleeping 4 people.
