Carrickfergus Castle is one of the most complete examples of Norman architecture in Northern Ireland, situated on the northern shore of Belfast Lough. Besieged over the centuries by the Scots, Irish, English and French, the castle played an important military role until 1928.
For more than 800 years, Carrickfergus Castle has stood as an imposing monument and today houses fascinating historical displays, along with an impressive collection of cannon from the 17th to the 19th centuries.
For EHOD, visitors can explore the site at their own pace through a self-guided experience, allowing time to take in the rich history and striking coastal setting.
As part of the “Centenary of Care,” marking 100 years since the introduction of legislation to protect Northern Ireland’s historic monuments, the castle reflects the ongoing work to care for and share these important places with the public. A member of staff will be present during your visit.
